Microsoft agrees with a teachers' union on ten AI principles for schools

Microsoft has agreed with the American Federation of Teachers, the second-largest US teachers union, and its New York City affiliate the United Federation of Teachers on ten principles governing AI in schools. They include not training models on student or educator data, limiting how much data is collected, explaining in plain language to families how the tools work, prohibiting AI companions, and requiring human review for high-risk decisions. From November, districts can add the terms to new or existing contracts without renegotiating the whole agreement, and the principles become contractually enforceable for districts that adopt them. The deal follows one-year bans on AI tools for many students imposed by New York City and Los Angeles a week earlier.
