Shopify moves its mobile apps from React Native back to native

Shopify is moving its mobile apps from React Native back to separate Swift and Kotlin codebases. The company switched to React Native in 2020 for three reasons: to stop building the same feature twice, to let developers work across the stack and to spend less time chasing feature parity. In its engineering post, Shopify writes that the cost of maintaining two platforms has not disappeared, but that coding agents now handle enough of the implementation, translation, testing and review work that the cost is no longer decisive. Shopify maintains three significant React Native libraries. react-native-skia and flash-list are finding new homes, while restyle, which has a smaller user base, will be archived at the end of 2026.
