Twenty-five Fields medalists criticize AI labs in an open letter

The Navier-Stokes dispute has a new element: an open letter signed by twenty-five mathematicians, each a Fields medalist. They argue that the race between labs to announce solutions to famous problems threatens mathematical work, because results are rushed out with no time for a proper writeup, for isolating the new methods, or for citing earlier work. OpenAI's announced proof remains unverified. A second development came on Thursday, when OpenAI withdrew its sponsorship of a mathematics event at CalTech after criticism from researchers there. The letter follows the Leiden Declaration published in June.
